Le Congolese Diaspora Impact Summit (CDIS) se réjouit de mettre en lumière la contribution de 10 jeunes talents d’exceptions d’origine congolaise (Génération Y et Z). Le CDIS a décidé d’honorer la génération montante de leaders originaire de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC) et de sa diaspora.

La liste ci-dessous présente une sélection de leader de la future génération dans des domaines aussi variés que les arts, les affaires et l’entrepreneuriat, la mode, la gouvernance, ainsi que les sciences, la technologie, l’ingénierie et les mathématiques (STIM). 

La sélection s’est basée sur l’excellence; les contributions dans les domaines d’expertises, le leadership éclairé et innovant au cours de l’année 2020. Tous s’identifient comme congolais ou appartenant à la diaspora congolaise.

Dr. Debora Kamin Mukaz : Héroïne de la lutte pour la santé cardiaque au sein des communautés noires

Dr. Debora Kamin Mukaz est la co-fondatrice de BlackInCardio, un mouvement BlackInX célébrant l’excellence noire dans le domaine cardiovasculaire tout en sensibilisant les communautés noires aux maladies cardiovasculaires

Son combat a notamment été couvert par le prestigieux magazine Forbes (Octobre 2020).

Originaire de Likasi, Haut-Katanga, Dr. Kamin Mu a obtenu son Bachelor en Biologie et en Français au Luther College de Decorah, en Iowa (USA). 

Elle y a développé son intérêt pour la recherche scientifique avec une thèse sur la génétique de la race et de l’ascendance. Dr. Debora a ensuite obtenu un diplôme en sciences biologiques à l’Université du Delaware (USA). 

En 2019, Dr. Debora a obtenu un doctorat en sciences médicales de la même université. Ses travaux de doctorat ont porté sur l’épidémiologie du diabète chez les migrants africains aux États-Unis. 

Actuellement, Dr. Debora est une post-doroctorante associée à l’Université du Vermont (USA).

HARMONY “Anne-Marie” Ilunga : Briser les barrières du monde de la mode

Harmony « Anne-Marie » Ilunga a élu domicile à Hong Kong en 2011 en tant que réfugiée. Confrontée à la discrimination en tant que mannequin de couleur, elle a fondé Harmony HK. Sa structure s’est donnée pour ultime mission de mettre en valeur les talents des minorités ethniques locales, et de contester le manque de diversité à Hong Kong

En février 2019, The Loop Hong Kong mentionnait Harmony dans son classement des 30 talents de moins de 30 ans de l’année. 

En 2020, Harmony HK fait de nombreuses apparitions dans les médias internationaux à la suite du mouvement Black Lives Matter.

L’agence Harmony compte aujourd’hui 32 talents masculins et féminins en provenance de pays comme le Pakistan, le Népal, le Rwanda, l’Inde, le Burundi, le Sri Lanka et les Philippines.

Harmony est en licence de psychologie. Elle est également co-fondatrice de Learning Together – une organisation qui dirige un programme éducatif pour les demandeurs d’asile et les réfugiés de Hong Kong âgés de 15 à 25 ans.

En 2020, le Dr. Ileka a co-écrit un article publié dans la prestigieuse Harvard Business Review : White Coats, Black Scientists. L’article aborde l’inquiétante question du racisme systémique au sein de la communauté scientifique et fournit des conseils aux institutions scientifiques sur la façon dont elles peuvent faire évoluer les choses. L’article a depuis été cité dans le Washington Post notamment.

Dr. Ileka est un membre actif de plusieurs organisations dont les objectifs sont de combler le fossé entre la science et les communautés marginalisées, en soulignant l’importance et la valeur des contributions que la science noire apporte à ces communautés

Il siège au conseil d’administration de la National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE). 

Né en RDC, Dr. Ileka aspire à faire partie de la génération qui change et façonne la narration autour de la RDC de façon à propulser le cœur de l’Afrique vers un avenir meilleur. 

Il est titulaire d’une licence de l’Université St. John’s (USA) et d’un doctorat en chimie de l’Université du Michigan (USA).

BIBI NDALA : Contre la mortalité infantile dans les communautés congolaises

Bibi Ndala est chercheuse au laboratoire de santé publique du Département de la santé et de l’hygiène mentale de la ville de New York (DOHMH), où elle contribue aux efforts de lutte contre le nouveau coronavirus.

Elle a lancé ELAKA en 2020, une organisation sans but lucratif qui soutient et éduque les futures mamans.  Elle fait également la promotion des mesures de prévention en matière de santé maternelle en RDC. 

Avec Elaka, Bibi envisage une RDC où les femmes sont économiquement fortes, indépendantes, capables d’accéder facilement aux soins de santé et ne meurent plus de causes évitables.

Elaka [eh-la-ka] vient du verbe en Lingala qui signifie prévenir, prédire, conseiller, prendre rendez-vous et  plus important, promettre.
Mme Bibi a obtenu sa maîtrise en santé publique à l’Université de New York après un brillant parcours académique au Canada.

Sa carrière professionnelle est guidée par son désir de rendre aux femmes congolaises qui « ont forgé son caractère ». Elle est également coordonnatrice bénévole à Friends of Congo.

Elle s’intéresse principalement à la santé des mères et des nouveau-nés, ainsi qu’aux questions sociales dans les milieux à faibles ressources.

OLIVIER KUPE : L’innovation au service de l’investissement financier et du management

Oliver Kupe est président et fondateur de Aurélien Capital Partners, une société de conseil et de gestion de patrimoine de nouvelle génération basée à Chicago. Fondée en 2020, elle gère et conseille actuellement pour plus de 100 millions de dollars en actifs de clients privés. 

La plateforme unique d’Aurélien est conçue pour gérer la vie des athlètes professionnels, des exonérés (condamnés à tort) et des particuliers/familles fortunées.

Oliver a grandi à Detroit mais est né et a grandi au Luxembourg de parents congolais. Avant de rejoindre le monde de la finance. Il a notamment été footballeur professionnel en MLS avant d’obtenir un bachelor en économie à l’Université de Northwestern (USA).

JENNIFER OPAL : Changer le discours autour de la neurodiversité avec la technologie

Jennifer Opal est une ingénieure en Big Data ayant remporté de nombreux prix en 2020. 

Elle a notamment été retenue parmi les femmes les plus influentes avec Tech UK 2020. La même année, elle  remportait le prix Rising Star aux Black Tech Achievement Awards. On notera par ailleurs sa nomination pour le prix Rising Technologist aux Techplaymaker Awards 2020. En 2020, elle est apparue dans des médias tels que The Guardian et BBC News. 

Jennifer porte le plaidoyer de la neurodiversité et de l’inclusivité. Elle intègre le monde de la technologie en 2019 malgré sa dyslexie, dyspraxie, ADHD (trouble de l’attention et hyperactivité) et sans aucun diplôme.

 Jennifer utilise sa voix et sa créativité pour inspirer les autres vers les métiers technologiques. Via ses réseaux sociaux autour de sa neuro-diversité et de son statut de femme noire dans le milieu. Elle partage également ses connaissances techniques et donne un aperçu de son parcours de carrière dans la technologie. 

NICHOLLE KOBI : Une artiste internationale au service de la visibilité des femmes

Nicholle Kobi est une artiste congolo-française, entrepreneure, conférencière et militante, surtout connue pour Black Women et Black Sisterhood Illustrations avec ses illustrations de mode. Elle est aussi la fondatrice de Nicholle Kobi Maison.

En juillet 2020, son partenariat avec Erik Barmack, un ancien dirigeant de Netflix, a été officialisé dans le cadre de « Queens », une série d’animation sur six reines africaines.

L’art de Nicholle s’adresse particulièrement aux femmes noires, indépendantes, modernes et n’ayant pas peur de violer les règles. Son objectif est de donner une plate-forme et une visibilité aux personnes qui sont invisibles dans l’art, comme les personnes handicapées.

SAMY MWAMBA : La créativité au service de la réponse à la pandémie

Samy Mwamba a lancé Itot Africa (IT Open Talk Africa) dans le but de populariser la culture numérique en RDC à travers la formation ouverte et les solutions numériques open-source.

En 2020, l’entreprise a conçu et offert au ministère congolais de la santé une plateforme de collecte de données sur les cas de COVID-19, ainsi qu’un outil de communication de masse pour informer la population sur la pandémie.

Depuis 2018, Itot Africa a élargi sa mission en se muant en créateur d’emplois en RDC grâce aux numériques. L’entreprise forme des talents en technologie numérique et les place ensuite dans des entreprises partenaires locales et internationales. 

À ce jour, Itot Africa a déjà formé plus de 1500 personnes et créé plus de 60 emplois. L’objectif de l’Afrique est de former 2500 personnes et de créer plus de 1000 emplois en RDC grâce à ses plateformes de formation et de recrutement en ligne. L’objectif de Samy est d’être un point de référence en Afrique en matière de formation numérique, en plus du recrutement. Samy est né et a grandi en RDC et a terminé ses études en génie logiciel.

Lukogho a longtemps collaboré avec l’ancien membre du Congrès américain José E. Serrano de New York. Après son passage au capitol, Lukogho a travaillé dans le développement commercial et dans le secteur des subventions et politiques d’entreprises pour des sociétés à Nairobi et à Accra avant de rejoindre Raytheon Technologies en 2019. Elle est titulaire d’un MBA en commerce international de l’Université Howard et d’une licence en sciences politiques de l’Université d’Etat de San Jose. Lukogho est née au Nord-Kivu.

Laura Kupe est avocate, polyglotte et une ancienne du ministère américain de la sécurité intérieure où elle avait été nommée par le président Obama. Son domaine d’expertise est la politique intérieure et étrangère des Etats-Unis. 

Elle est actuellement conseillère juridique auprès du Comité de la sécurité intérieure de la Chambre des représentants des États-Unis. Laura est diplômée en droit (Juris Doctor) de la faculté de droit de l’Université du Michigan et titulaire d’une licence de la même université. 

Laura est née en Allemagne de parents congolais et a grandi au Luxembourg avant de déménager aux États-Unis.

JOSUEL MUSAMBAGHANI : Combattre la COVID-19 avec la science et la technologie

En 2020, Josuel Musambaghani s’est associé au Dr. Jonathan Mboyo Esole pour créer covid19drc.com, un site Web qui combine les sciences et la technologie afin de lutter contre la pandémie de COVID-19 en RDC

Ils sont également à l’origine d’un programme de production de visières en collaboration avec l’école pour filles de Noëlla Coursaris, Malaika, où des élèves ont participé à l’impression en 3D de milliers de visières.

Les visières ont ensuite été distribuées dans les hôpitaux du Haut-Katanga durant la pandémie. Des projets de la même nature ont été entrepris à travers la RDC avec d’autres partenaires d’exception via ce programme.

Josuel est ingénieur logiciel chez Microsoft, au sein de la division cybersécurité. Son équipe a remporté les prix CSO50 en 2019 et 2020 (cybersécurité). Josuel siège aussi au conseil consultatif de Microsoft Aspire Experience et est co-président du réseau des employés africains chez Microsoft. 

Avant Microsoft, Josuel a travaillé avec plusieurs startups et organisations de la Silicon Valley, dont Jawbone, Code2040 et Slack. Josuel est un membre consultatif de la fondation Malaika qui fait la promotion des STIM (sciences, technologies, ingénierie et mathématiques) de l’école.

Musambaghani est également le cofondateur de Kwafrika Travel Ltd, un tour opérateur axé sur le client qui vise à exploiter la valeur économique de l’Afrique. Josuel est titulaire d’une licence en mathématiques et en informatique (Bachelor of Science) de l’université Morehouse College où il a obtenu la mention honorifique Phi Beta Kappa.

CDIS is pleased to highlight the contributions of 10 outstanding Millennials and GenZers who are of Congolese descent. CDIS is amplifying the importance of experts and honoring the next generation of rising leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its Diaspora.

The list below features next-generation leaders in fields such as the arts and entertainment, business and entrepreneurship, fashion, governance, and the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The selection was based on excellence and leadership; the nominees’ contributions to their areas of expertise through thought leadership and innovation in 2020, and self-identifying as Congolese or being part of the Congolese Diaspora.

Dr. Debora Kamin Mukaz is a co-founder of BlackInCardio, a BlackInX movement to celebrate Black excellence in the cardiovascular fields and raise awareness on cardiovascular diseases in Black communities. Debora’s critical work with BlackInCardio was featured in Forbes in October 2020.

Harmony “Anne-Marie” Ilunga: Breaking down barriers in the fashion world

Harmony “Anne-Marie” Ilunga is from the DRC and moved to Hong Kong in 2011 as a refugee. Facing discrimination as a model of color, she founded Harmony HK, a fashion company with the quintessential belief to spotlight local ethnic minority talents, and challenge the lack of diversity in Hong Kong. In February of 2019, she was awarded by The Loop Hong Kong the best of 30 under 30. 

Harmony HK was profiled across international news outlets in 2020, in the aftermath of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Harmony’s agency now has 32 men and women models on its roster from countries such as Pakistan, Nepal, Rwanda, India, Burundi, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines.

Harmony is currently studying for a bachelor’s degree in psychology, she works as a freelance model, and is the co-founder of Learning Together – an organization that runs an educational program for asylum seekers and refugees in Hong Kong aged 15 to 25.

Dr. Kevin Ileka: Fighting against racism in the scientific community

In 2020, Dr. Ileka co-authored an article that was published in Harvard Business Review: White Coats, Black Scientists. The article highlights that systemic racism is prevalent within the scientific community and provides advice to scientific institutions on how they can address anti-racism. The article has since been quoted in The Washington Post.

Dr. Ileka is an active member in several organizations whose aims are to bridge the gap between science and marginalized communities, by highlighting the importance and value of contributions that Black science brings to such communities

He serves on the board of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE). 

Born in the DRC, Dr. Ileka hopes to be part of the generation that changes and shapes the narrative of the DRC, propelling the heart of Africa into a better future. 

He earned his bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University (USA) and a doctoral degree in chemistry from The University of Michigan (USA).

Bibi Ndala: Supporting Congolese mothers and babies

Bibi Ndala is a City Research Scientist at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) Public Health Laboratory, where she contributes in the efforts to combat the novel coronavirus. 

She launched ELAKA in 2020, a not-for-profit organization that supports and educates expecting mothers, as well as promotes and advocates for preventive maternal health measures in DRC. With Elaka, Bibi envisions a DRC where women are economically strong, independent, able to easily access the health care they deserve, and no longer die due to preventable causes.

Elaka [eh-la-ka] comes from the verb in Lingala (a Bantu language), which means to warn, to predict, to advice, to make an appointment and most importantly, to promise.
Bibi completed her master’s degree in Public Health at New York University after a brilliant academic journey in Canada. 

Her professional career is fueled by a desire to give back to the Congolese women who “forged her character.” In addition to being a City Research Scientist, she serves as the Volunteer Coordinator at Friends of the Congo.

Her main interests focus on maternal and newborn health, as well as social issues in low-resource settings.

Jennifer Opal is a multi-award winning Big Data Engineer.

She was named as one of the Most Influential Women In Tech UK 2020 . She is a winner of the Rising Star Award at the Black Tech Achievement Awards 2020 , and was nominated for the Rising Technologist Award at the Techplaymaker Awards 2020  to name a few. She has also been featured in The Guardian, interviewed for BBC News, and spoken at Women Techmakers, Google, and BT Group. 

Jennifer is a Neurodiversity and Inclusion Advocate. She entered the tech world in 2019 with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and no degree. 

Jennifer uses her voice and creativity to inspire others to learn how to code and/or move into the tech space. Through social media, she creates content addressing neurodivergence and being a black woman in tech. Further on, she also shares her technical knowledge and gives insights to her tech career journey.

Nicholle Kobi is a Congolese-French artist, entrepreneur, speaker and activist, mostly known for Black Women and Black Sisterhood Illustrations along with her fashion illustrations. She is also the founder of Nicholle Kobi Maison, which is filled with love of sisterhood and women.

In July 2020, it was also announced that Nicholle is partnering with Erik Barmack, a former Netflix executive, on “Queens,” an animated series about six African queens.

Nicholle’s art is mostly directed towards women who are black , independent, modern and not afraid to break the rules. The goal of her art is to give a platform and a spotlight to people that are invisible in art, such as plus size people or the disabled.

Samy Mwamba: Creating new tools for pandemic response

Samy Mwamba launched Itot Africa (IT Open Talk Africa) with the aim of popularizing digital culture in the DRC through open training and open-source digital solutions. 

In 2020, the company designed and offered the Congolese Ministry of Health a platform for collecting data on COVID-19 cases, as well as a mass communication tool to inform the population about the pandemic.

Since 2018, Itot  Africa has improved its mission, which has become that of creating and bringing back jobs in the DRC thanks to digital skills. The company trains talent in digital technology and then places them in local and international partner companies.

To date, Itot Africa has already trained more than 1,500 people and created more than 60 jobs. Itot Africa’s goal within the next five years is to train 2,500 people and create more than 1,000 jobs in the DRC through its online training and recruitment platforms. Samy’s goal is to be a reference point in Africa when it comes to digital training, in addition to recruitment. Samy was born and raised in the DRC and completed his studies in software engineering.

Lukogho Kasomo and Laura Kupe are the co-founders of Congolese-Americans for Biden (CA4B). Through CA4B, they sought to mobilize and empower the Congolese-American community to become civically engaged in American politics.

Combining their expertise in government affairs and foreign policy, they used their knowledge to instill a sense of consciousness and a spirit of political activism in the Congolese-American community in the United States.

Lukogho worked for several years as a Legislative Staffer and Press Assistant for former U.S. Representative José E. Serrano of New York; member of the Appropriations Committee. After her Hill tenure, Lukogho worked in business development and on grants and policy for firms in Nairobi and Accra before joining Raytheon Technologies in 2019. She has an MBA in International Business from Howard University and a BA in Political Science from San José State University. Lukogho was born in North Kivu, D.R. Congo.

Laura Kupe is a former Obama presidential appointee to the Department of Homeland Security in the Office of International Engagement and multilingual attorney with domestic and foreign policy expertise in think tanks and the U.S. federal government, including the U.S. House of Representatives, the Department of Homeland Security, and the White House. She is currently working in the U.S. House of Representatives as Counsel on the Committee on Homeland Security. Laura graduated with a BA from the University of Michigan and a JD from the University of Michigan Law School. Laura was born in Germany to Congolese parents and was raised in Luxembourg before moving to the United States.

Josuel Musambaghani: Fighting COVID-19 with science and technology

In 2020, Josuel Musambaghani teamed up with Dr. Jonathan Mboyo Esole to create covid19drc.com, a website that merges science and technology, to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in DRC.

Additionally, they initiated a shield program that offers free medical equipment to hospitals and first responders. Through Noella Coursaris’ outstanding school for girls, Malaika, and the involvement of its ingenious students,  thousands of face shields were 3D printed and distributed across hospitals in Haut-Katanga. Similar endeavors were undertaken in provinces across DR Congo, involving various outstanding partners.

Josuel is a Software Engineer at Microsoft, with the cybersecurity division. His team won the 2019 and 2020 CSO50 Awards, an accolade that recognizes organizations for cybersecurity projects and initiatives that demonstrate excellent business value. Josuel serves on the Advisory board for the Microsoft Aspire Experience and is the Co-Chair of the Employee Network Africans @ Microsoft. 

Before Microsoft, Josuel worked with Silicon Valley startups and organizations, including Jawbone, Code2040, and Slack. Josuel is an advisory member of the education nonprofit, Malaika, furthering the school’s STEM program.

He is also the cofounder of Kwafrika Travel Ltd, a customer-centric digital tour operator aimed at harnessing Africa’s economic value. Josuel is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College, with degrees as valedictorian in mathematics and computer science.
