“Trois auteurs d’Histoire: Nelson Makengo, Georges Senga, Pamela Tulizo” est une exposition collective qui aura lieu à Milan en Italie du 14 septembre au 28 octobre 2021. Elle a été élaborée en tant qu’hommage à l’ambassadeur italien Luca Attanasio dont l’implication personnelle et professionnelle dans le soutien de l’art et de la culture en République Démocratique du Congo mérite d’être commémorée.

“Trois auteurs d’Histoire : Nelson Makengo, Georges Senga, Pamela Tulizo” est une conversation à trois ayant le but de présenter à Milan un échantillon de la scène artistique contemporaine congolaise à travers les pratiques très différentes de ces trois artistes.
Ceux-ci, ces dernières années, ont acquis un rôle sur la scène internationale en recevant des prix et en participant à des résidences ainsi qu’aux éditions précédentes des Biennales congolaises. Par ailleurs, l’exposition vise à agir comme un connecteur culturel entre les trois villes d’origine des artistes : Kinshasa, Lubumbashi et Goma. Leur travail est imprégné de traits culturels propres à leur ville, rendant leurs réalisations uniques et profondément distinctes les unes des autres.
Les artistes dialogueront entre eux dans l’espace en faisant interagir leurs oeuvres, unies par le moyen de la photographie. L’exposition sera composée des images animées de la vidéo Up at Night (2019) de Nelson Makengo accompagnée d’une installation, du triptyque photographique Le Vide (2019) de Georges Senga imprimé en grand format et de la dernière série de photographies extrêmement retravaillées de Pamela Tulizo.
L’exposition montre la réalité d’un triangle congolais entre trois régions, trois villes qui contribuent à la construction et au développement continu de l’identité du pays. Du délestage électrique à Kinshasa jusqu’à l’histoire de l’exploitation des ressources minières, en passant par le rôle des femmes dans les régions du Nord et du Sud-Kivu, les thèmes de l’exposition sont imprégnés de la vie de ceux qui les ont vécus et racontent leur histoire.
Pamela Tulizo, Enfer Paradisiaque, Lutambi, 2021
L’exposition a été élaborée en collaboration avec la conservatrice invitée Angelica Litta Modignani et l’association culturelle indépendante Picha. Fondée en 2008 à Lubumbashi par un groupe de jeunes artistes ayant le but de promouvoir l’art contemporain dans la ville, Picha, à travers l’organisation de la Biennale de Lubumbashi et de nombreux AteliersD’Artiste, est depuis lors le tremplin du développement international des artistes au Congo. Les parcours des trois artistes de l’exposition sont étroitement liés avec l’histoire de Picha, qui les suit et les accompagne depuis le début.
En témoignage de la présence cruciale de Picha dans l’élaboration du projet, l’exposition est accompagnée d’un texte critique du président de l’association, Jean Katambayi Mukendi, qui lie ainsi les artistes sélectionnés pour cette exposition collective :
“[…] Nelson, Georges et Pamela ont évolué séparément avant que le destin les aligne sur cette exposition triumvirat. Makengo, Senga et Tulizo, les photographes eux-mêmes, scrutent la société par des approches algorithmiques qui se recoupent dans la socio-proximité, par l’investigation-temporelle et par la fiction-gender.”
LES ARTISTES
Nelson Makengo
Né en 1990, Nelson Makengo vit et travaille à Kinshasa. C’est un réalisateur, artiste visuel et producteur Congolais dont le travail oscille entre l’art contemporain et le cinéma. Makengo a participé aux Talents de la Berlinale 2020 et a été membre du jury du Festival international du film documentaire d’Amsterdam (IDFA) 2020. Up at Night 2019, son sixième court-métrage a remporté plusieurs prix, dont Short documentary IDFA 2019 (Inscrit pour les Oscars 2021), Award Dérives FIFF, Namur 2020, Award Fidadoc 2020, Best documentary Miradasdoc 2021 et a été projeté dans plus de cinquante prestigieux festivals internationaux et institutions d’art contemporain, notamment Sundance, Full Frame Documentary, True/False Film Fest, Cinéma du réel, London Short Film Festival, Encontro De Cinema Negro, Zozimo Bulbul – Brésil, WIELS Art Center, Galérie Imane Fares, Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine Paris. Son court-métrage de 2018, E’ville, a été présenté dans plus de 30 festivals à travers le monde, remportant plusieurs prix, notamment le prix de la résidence de la Sharjah Art Foundation à la Biennale Videobrasil 2019 et le meilleur court-métrage documentaire au Festival du film du Rwanda 2019, Grand prix du jury St Louis Film Festival, Sénégal.
Georges Senga
Né en 1983 à Lubumbashi, la recherche photographique de Georges Senga s’articule autour de l’histoire et des récits révélés par “la mémoire, l’identité et la tradition”, éclairant nos actions et le présent. En 2009, il a remporté le prix spécial de la deuxième édition du concours de photographie africaine à Tarifa, en Espagne, et a exposé au Centre culturel français de Lubumbashi. En 2010, la série Empreintes a été sélectionnée par le commissaire Simon Djami pour la Biennale de Lubumbashi. L’année suivante, cette série a également été présentée à Tarifa, Nairobi et Bamako. De 2011 à 2013, Georges a participé au programme “Master Class” organisé par le Goethe Institut de Johannesburg dans plusieurs villes d’Afrique. Une vie après la mort sur Patrice Lumumba a été exposée aux Dialogues de la Galerie d’art contemporain du Musée national de Lubumbashi en 2013, à la Biennale de Kampala, à l’ADDIS PHOTOFEST en 2014, au Centre culturel BRASS à Bruxelles et à la Biennale de Bamako où elle a remporté le Prix Léon Africain en 2015. De 2015 à 2017, Senga a créé une nouvelle série Cette maison n’est pas à vendre et à vendre entre Lubumbashi en RD Congo et Sao Paulo au Brésil. Tout au long de sa carrière, Senga a reçu plusieurs prix, notamment : le Thamie Mnyele Prix (Pays-Bas, 2019), DemoCrasee, Biennale de Bamako (Mali 2017), CAP PRIZE – International Contemporary African Photography Award de l’IAF Basel (Suisse, 2017), SADC Research Residency Prohelveltia (Afrique du Sud, 2017), Mention spéciale, PHOTOAFRICA (Espagne, 2009). De janvier 2014 à février 2020, Georges Senga a participé à de nombreuses résidences en Belgique, en Allemagne et aux Pays-Bas ainsi qu’en 2020-2021 à la résidence Villa Médicis – Académie de France à Rome.
Pamela Tulizo
Née en 1993 à Bukavu, Pamela Tulizo est une photographe documentaire et une artiste basée à Goma. Après avoir initialement entrepris des études de journalisme, Pamela a suivi une résidence à l’école de photographie Market Photo Workshop de Johannesburg, en Afrique du Sud, en 2019. Son travail se concentre principalement sur les expressions de l’identité féminine. Sa récente série intitulée Double Identité a remporté le prix Dior Photography & Visual Arts Award for Young Talents en 2020. En rencontrant l’un des photographes les plus actifs à Goma, Martin Lukongo, elle a appris les techniques photographiques de base et après des mois de pratique artistique Pamela a participé à des sessions de formation en photographie avec Yole Africa à Goma, au Sénégal avec Africalia et à Lubumbashi avec le Picha Art Center. Son travail sur les femmes est apparu à la Biennale de Lubumbashi et dans plusieurs projets tels que ELLE equals IL Kinshasa, Congo Harlem à New York, Kinshasa. Par ailleurs, Pamela est une collaboratrice de l’Agence France-Presse.

“Trois auteurs d’Histoire: Nelson Makengo, Georges Senga, Pamela Tulizo” is a collective exhibition set to take place in Milan, Italy between September 14th and October 28th, 2021. It is envisioned as a tribute to the Italian ambassador Luca Attanasio whose personal and professional involvement in supporting the arts and cultural sectors in Congo calls for a commemoration.

Trois auteurs d’Histoire: Nelson Makengo, Georges Senga, Pamela Tulizo is a three-way conversation that aims at bringing to Milan a cross-section of the contemporary Congolese art scene through the very different practices of these artists who, in recent years, have gained international recognition by winning prizes, residencies and featuring in past editions of the Congolese Biennales. The exhibition also aims to generate an exchange between the artists’ cities of origin – Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and Goma – whose profoundly different and disjointed cultural traits permeate the work of each artist.
The artists will dialogue within the gallery space through the interaction of their artworks which share the use of photography as a medium. The exhibition will feature the moving images of Nelson Makengo’s short-film Up at Night (2019) completed by an installation, Georges Senga’s photographic triptych Le Vide (2019) printed in large scale and Pamela Tulizo’s latest series of extremely reworked and therefore fantastical photographs. The realities exposed in the exhibition are developed through a triangular Congo as they originate from three different regions, three cities, that are contributing to the ongoing construction and development of the country’s identity. The set of themes transpiring during the exhibition, from the lack of electricity in Kinshasa, the history of exploitation of the country’s mineral resources to the portrayal of Kivu women on international press, are imbued with the lives of those who have lived them and are here today to tell these stories.
Pamela Tulizo, Enfer Paradisiaque, Lutambi, 2021
The exhibition was conceived in collaboration with guest curator Angelica Litta Modignani and the independent cultural association Picha. Founded in 2008 in Lubumbashi by a group of young artists with the objective of promoting contemporary art in and out of their city, Picha, through the organization of the Lubumbashi Biennial and many Atelier D’Artiste, has since become the springboard for developing artists’ careers in Congo. The histories of the protagonists of this exhibition are indeed intertwined with that of Picha, which has followed and supported them since the very beginning of their artistic careers.
As testimony of Picha’s crucial role in the elaboration of this project, the exhibition is accompanied by a critical essay written by the president of the association Jean Katambayi Mukendi, linking the selected artists as follows:
“[…] It is in this context that Nelson, Georges and Pamela evolved separately before fate aligned them in this triumvirate exhibition. Makengo, Senga and Tulizo, indeed all photographers, scrutinise society through algorithmic approaches that are declined respectively in social proximity, in temporal investigation and in fiction-gender”.
THE ARTISTS
Nelson Makengo
Born in 1990, Nelson Makengo lives and works in Kinshasa. He is a Congolese director, visual artist and producer whose work oscillates between contemporary art and cinema. Makengo participated in the 2020 Berlinale Talents and was a jury member at the 2020 International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA). Up at Night 2019, his sixth short film has won several awards, including Short documentary IDFA 2019 (Entered for the 2021 Oscars), Award Dérives FIFF, Namur 2020, Award Fidadoc 2020, Best documentary Miradasdoc 2021 and has been screened at more than fifty prestigious international festivals and contemporary art institution, including Sundance, Full Frame Documentary, True/False Film Fest, Cinéma du réel, London Short Film Festival, Encontro De Cinema Negro, Zozimo Bulbul – Brésil, WIELS Art Center, Galérie Imane Fares, Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine Paris. Georges Senga
Georges Senga was born in 1983 in Lubumbashi. His photographic research is concentrated around history and the stories revealed in “memory, identity and tradition”, shedding light on our actions and the present. In 2009 he won the special prize at the second edition of the African Photo Contest in Tarifa, Spain and exhibited his work at the French Cultural Centre in Lubumbashi. In 2010, the series Empreintes was selected by curator Simon Djami for the Lubumbashi Biennial. The following year, this series was also presented in Tarifa, Nairobi and Bamako. From 2011 to 2013, Georges participated in the “Master Class” program organised by the Goethe Institute in Johannesburg in several African cities. A Life After Death on Patrice Lumumba was exhibited at the Dialogues of the Contemporary Art Gallery of the National Museum of Lubumbashi in 2013, the Kampala Biennial, the ADDIS PHOTOFEST in 2014, the BRASS Cultural Centre in Brussels and the Bamako Biennial where it won the Leon African Award in 2015. From 2015 to 2017, Senga created another new series This house is not for sale and for sale between Lubumbashi in DR Congo and São Paulo in Brazil. During his career, Senga has received various awards including: the Thamie Mnyele Prize (the Netherlands, 2019), DemoCrasee, Bamako Biennale (Mali 2017), CAP PRIZE – International Contemporary African Photography Award from IAF Basel (Switzerland, 2017), SADC Research Residency Prohelveltia (South Africa, 2017), Special Mention, PHOTOAFRICA (Spain, 2009). From January 2014 to February 2020, Georges Senga held numerous residencies in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands and in 2020-2021 he was selected for the Villa Médicis – Académie de France residency in Rome.
Pamela Tulizo
Born in 1993 in Bukavu, Pamela Tulizo is a documentary photographer and artist based in Goma. After initially studying journalism, Pamela attended a residency at the Market Photo Workshop photography school in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2019. Her work primarily focuses on expressions of female identity. Her recent series titled Double Identity, won the 2020 Dior Photography & Visual Arts Award for Young Talents. Through meeting one of the photographers active in Goma, Martin Lukongo, she learned some basic photographic techniques, and after months of artistic practice, Pamela participated in photography training sessions with Yole Africa in Goma, in Senegal with Africalia and in Lubumbashi with the Picha Art Center. Her work on women has appeared at the Lubumbashi Biennial, and in various projects such as ELLE equals IL Kinshasa, Congo in Harlem in New York, Kinshasa. Further to this, Pamela is also a contributor to Agence France-Presse.
